Hello Wonderseekers!
A couple of weeks ago, I had eye surgery on my ‘good eye’. (I wrote about my wacky eyes prior to having a different eye surgery.) In preparation, I created a few newsletters ahead of time, but while I was recovering, so much has happened!
The iconic Jane Goodall departed this earthly plane, leaving behind a legacy of active hope. (I LOVE what she said about her greatest teacher of empathy.) The Nobel Prizes were awarded, highlighting some incredible scientific innovations (like this one that could help bring water to deserts.). And a fragile cease-fire was declared in the Middle East, allowing for the final hostage exchange, hopefully indicating the beginning of healing for both of the communities impacted by the ghastly war. Life keeps life-ing, for good or for naught, even when we can’t engage in it.
While I was recovering, I was pretty much blind, so I had a looooooooong time to listen to stuff. (I am a very impatient patient!) Music, podcasts, the sound of the coots in the marina outside my barge window were my companions. I felt a lot of gratitude for my eyes and the contacts that make them functional. But I also found a greater appreciation of my hearing and how much more deeply we seem to engage with purely aural, rather than visual input.
So this week I am sharing some wonderbringers you can listen to, and a bit about why we like them so much.
Some wonderbringers for me this week:
Listen: Not your typical true crime story from Criminal podcast: The Clearwater Monster.
Listening in on horror: Why many women love true crime podcasts.
Listen: The Sleeping Forecast: 5 Hours of The Shipping Forecast to lull you to sleep.
The Shipping Forecast turns 100: How the British institution reminds us of the power of the human voice.
Listen: The Radio Birdsong Podcast: A track of birdsong used by UK radio station ClassicFM to test transmissions.
Listening to birds sing really does soothe your brain: Here’s why.
I’ll be holding the drawing for a free signed copy of my book next week. Anyone else who wants to be entered just has to respond to me with the answer to this question: What is the only disease to be eradicated through human action?
And thank you to Wonderbringers reader Kerstin who shared that the digital academic library JSTOR now has a free account with an Independent Researcher category where you can access 100 free documents per month! Thanks Kerstin!
With wonder,
