Hello Wonderseekers!
Spring has sprung for me this week! First, it was sunny skies and sunny smiles in San Diego. Then it Seeing old friends and visiting old towns in Oregon. In fact, I visited Astoria, which is the oldest town west of the Rockies. It was settled in 1811 shortly after the end of Lewis and Clark’s expedition up the Columbia River (and—good trivia here—is also the setting for the 1985 classic film The Goonies.) I celebrated spring by drinking hazy pales ales and watching the fog burn off Haystack Rock on Cannon Beach.
Some ways other countries celebrate the equinox and warmer temps:
Japan – Shunbun no Hi: This public holiday honours ancestors with visits to family burial sites, cleaning gravestones, and offering up botamochi (rice balls). It's also a time to appreciate the stunning cherry blossom trees during Sakura season.
Thailand – Songkran: Just after the equinox, Songkran marks the Thai New Year with a three-day water festival. Participants engage in water fights to wash away bad luck as well as a tradition of sprinkling water on Buddha statues.
Central Asia, the Middle East, the Caucasus, the Balkans – Nowruz: Rooted in Zoroastrianism, Nowruz (or ‘new day’) celebrates spring, rebirth, and renewal. People honour the ideals of Nowruz through spring cleaning, fire rituals (like jumping over bonfires) and family gatherings.
Poland – The drowning of Marzanna: To usher in spring, this pagan tradition involves burning and ‘drowning’ effigies of Marzanna, the Slavic goddess of winter.
