Wonderbringers Newsletter with Monica Parker

Hello Wonderseekers!
I’ve been struggling to write these newsletters the last few weeks. I feel a distinct angst as I try to express my belief — even beyond belief, my knowing— that wonder is the balm and antidote for trying times and balance that against not wanting my faith in the power of wonder to sound trite or pollyanna given the very real pain people are feeling right now.
I also don’t want this newsletter to amplify darkness. We have enough sources of doom and gloom and this should be a moment in your week of light and levity and learning. But equally, it feels wrong to blithely ignore the harms against institutions and individuals growing daily.
Lastly, I know that not everyone sees the world through the same lens as I do. And while it is becoming more difficult for me to accept that alternative world view with compassion, I try to recall the words of Thich Nhat Hanh, ‘When another person makes you suffer, it is because he suffers deeply within himself, and his suffering is spilling over. […] When you begin to see that your enemy is suffering, that is the beginning of insight.’
It feels some days like I’m walking a tightrope, teetering across an abyss where despair snaps its jaws on one side and wilful ignorance sings its siren song on the other. Perhaps you’ve been struggling with a similar balancing act? How are you managing it?
Let me know, and next week, I’ll share some of the ways you are tackling this upside-down time. Let’s use this community as a resource for bringing more wonder to each other.
Some wonderbringers for me this week:
Listen on repeat for instant goosebumps: Charles Yang sings Sam Cooke’s ‘Change is Gonna Come.’
Watch for a good noggin noodle: Max Stossel on life after delivery.
The secret chords: When music is medicine.
