Wonderbringers Newsletter with Monica Parker

Hello Wonderseekers!
I’m in the Mekong Delta, it’s almost midnight, and internet service is spotty, so you’ll have to forgive this week’s being a very skinny Wonderbringers.
There is so much nocturnal activity here, and yet I find it peaceful all the same. The score of the scene is a steady symphony of cricket song, cockerels and outboard engines, punctuated intermittently by the throaty strains of karaoke emanating anonymously from some low-slung creeping houseboat the size of a semi-truck, loaded so deep with pumpkins, the lapping water almost to its gunnels. Blocks of light from haphazard bankside dwellings punch holes into the pitch darkness of the delta, illuminating the quotidian of the hard, rich life within. So foreign, and yet hints of the bayou and Everglades make it feel a bit like home. There’s just too much wonder around for me to worry about connecting to the rest of the world right now.
But next week’s newsletter is all about anticipation, so it’s apropos, no? :)
Some wonderbringers for me this week:
Why being near water really does make us happier: There are scientific reasons why we're so drawn to lakes, rivers, and oceans.
The Mekong is slowly dying: Can the once-mighty river be saved?
Why Laos thinks this serpent god deserves UNESCO status: Nagas are a cultural treasure in this Southeast Asian country.
With wonder,
