Hello wonderseekers!
I just returned from Paris, where I was speaking at the WeConnect Europe Supplier Diversity and Inclusion Conference. It was an opportunity for women-owned businesses to connect with large corporate organisations that have committed to closing the gender purchasing gap. The conference also highlighted other underserved groups, including those with physical and cognitive disabilities.
I had the opportunity to attend a session presented by P&G (aka Procter & Gamble, the largest consumer goods company in the world and home to brands like Herbal Essences, Mr. Clean and Pampers), where they showed some of the work they are doing to support people with disabilities, and I have to say, it was such a wonderbinger for me!!
In the sessions, they shared the ways they have been redesigning cleaning products to be more inclusive, including redesigning laundry pod boxes so they are simultaneously inaccessible by little humans, but easily accessible by big humans. What I loved about that innovation, in particular, is that when they presented the problem to their engineers, they were told a solution was impossible. But what the team developed ended up being not just helpful for people with disabilities, but for all users. This a message I have been preaching in my work in office design — inclusive design helps everyone — but to see it put into action with a company that touches 5 billion people every day was very cool.
The other big “wow and whoa” moment for me was learning about their clever tactile system, which is a new open-source universal touch-based language that helps vision-impaired people identify some of their different products. I’ll explain all about it below.
