Hello wonderseekers!
Middle age is an odd time. This weekend, I see my stepson head off to University. I can remember my college years as if they were yesterday. (I felt so grown-up — I was certain knew everything.) Also, this week, the home my husband grew up in goes under contract. 56 years his parents lived there before they both entered an eldercare facility this past year.
It’s not so much “doors opening and closing” as it is recognising so acutely the inexorable passage of time. To be able to feel, almost viscerally, the excitement of heading off to college, but also to sense almost as keenly what our final years might be. And not just to sense it, but to know it — as though I had experienced it in another life and am recalling those memories, rather than just conjuring up a possible future.
Aging is a privilege, even if it is accompanied by physical and mental changes that feel like the unwelcome beginning of an end. Despite all the messages to the contrary (fuelled by the anti-aging industry that is projected to be valued at $610 billion globally by 2025), growing old is a gift, and one many do not receive. But of course, what we all want are stories of aging like two linked below — to be old in years but young in heart and mind.
In my message below, a profound thought on middle age from the late, great author and intellectual Joseph Campbell.

Some wonderbringers for me this week:
Life advice from a 103-year-old you didn't know you needed: Her secrets for living a more fulfilling life.
Woman to mark 102nd birthday by breaking skydiving record: She celebrated her 100th birthday behind the wheel of a Ferrari racing car at Silverstone.
Time marches on predictably, but biological aging is anything but constant: Massive biomolecular shifts occur in our 40s and 60s.
Can’t wait to see some of you in Paris next week!
With wonder,
