Hello wonderseekers!
I just finished Dr. James Doty’s book Mind Magic. In it, he explains the neuroscience behind manifesting. For anyone who is familiar with the wildly popular book, film, or TV series The Secret, you’ll be familiar with the concept of manifesting and ‘the law of attraction.’ You may be a believer or a skeptic (or perhaps, like myself, a combo of the two.). While The Secret leans heavily into the woo, there’s heaps of scientific evidence that those who imagine and write down their goals experience greater success, so I’ve always been curious what aspects of manifesting are science backed.
I grew up in a home where manifesting was very popular. While I often bristled against the toxic positivity of it at the time, Doty’s book has illustrated, with a solid dose of neuroscience, how our thoughts reinforce the lens through which we see and behave in the world.
In the simplest terms, our brain only consciously sees about 2% of what we are actually exposed to. A manifestation practice primes our brain with what we hope to achieve, so it scours the other 98% of our experience to bring information, connections, and opportunities to our conscious mind that would have otherwise remained hidden. That additional information makes success in our goals that much more likely.
Below, some tips from Dr. Doty for an effective manifestation practice.

Some wonderbringers for me this week:
Many popular strategies for increasing happiness lack research support: But wonderbringers like gratitude and novelty do work.
Animated video about Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar: The Indian astronomer whose innovative work on black holes was mocked at Cambridge.
The Perfect Day Exercise (great manifestation exercise): Huberman Lab podcast with Dr. Martha Beck
Hope you are out enjoying the last weeks of summer!
With wonder,
