Hello wonderseekers!
I am LOVING all the eclipse photos people have been posting! I also love the Axios newsletter that shared all the ways the eclipse brought out the best in people. My friend Ellis shared this article with me as well, about the eclipse being a potential catalyst for healing our political divides. Wouldn’t that be lovely!
I am very concerned with the effect of polarisation, and it seems to exacerbated by our online actvity. A book that has been making headlines right now that touches on that is the new one by Jonathan Haidt, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness. I am a follower of Haidt’s work as he was one of the authors of the seminal academic article describing awe. In Haidt’s book, he posits that as adults, we are so cautious of the risks children take in their external world (I talked about the need for more risky play in children in past newsletters) and that we allow children to take such huge risks in the online world. This, he believes, is driving anxiety and ill mental health in children. I believe it is also at the heart of growing polarization.
