Hello wonderseekers!
I am back in London this week and bummed that I’ll be missing the full solar eclipse that will be shooting across North America this coming week. This eclipse is particularly special as the totality will be viewable to a huge number of people. It is also expected to be especially spectacular as the solar activity this year is very high, so viewers will be able to enjoy a lot of coronal dramatics, as well as the eclipse being a few minutes longer in duration than previous ones.
Eclipses have often held great symbolism throughout history, and it’s not surprising why. I can’t imagine the fear and exhilaration of viewing an eclipse absent the scientific knowledge of what was occurring. It’s a true wonderbringer even now, but it had to have been quite terrifying in ancient times. The most popular explanations for the event have been that the sun was being eaten (depending on what tradition) by any number of creatures, including a mythical frog, bat, jaguar, wolf, dragon, leopard, bear, squirrel, and even a demon’s beheaded head looking to exact revenge.
For those interested in astrology, below I share some of the meaning behind this year’s eclipse. (Hint: it includes something known as “Lunar Nodes of Destiny,” releasing some chaotic energy…)
