Hello wonderseekers!
This week, my stepfather passed away, and I am in Atlanta planning the memorial this weekend. Some of you may know of Franklin, as his story of the ravages of Alzheimer’s and the power of wonder served as the introduction to my book.
His passing has gotten me thinking about what it means to have a good death. For an experience we are all facing, we don’t do a very good job of confronting death. Most people would say that, at minimum, a good death is about having dignity and being free of pain, but what about other factors? Is it leaving a legacy? Is it having made adequate plans? (Only about a third of Americans under the age of 65 have made end-of-life plans.) Is having the right to choose when you die a marker of a good death? Where would you even start if you wanted to make an end-of-life plan?
There is so much focus on the good life, but what does a good death mean to you?

Some wonderbringers for me this week:
Jonathan Haidt was one of the primary researchers on awe: Hear him on the Hidden Brain podcast talking about his new book, The Anxious Generation.
Why does Jonathan Haidt think kids are anxious?: End the Phone-Based Childhood Now.
New hope: Powerful Psychedelic Gains Renewed Attention as a Treatment for Opioid Addiction.
This week is Holy Week, a time very much centered on death, legacy, meaning, and, most especially, hope. It is also Ramadan, a time for reflection and intention setting. To those who celebrate (and those who don’t), I hope this next week brings you peace, introspection, and wonder.
I placed one foot on the wide plain
of death, and some grand
immensity sounded on the emptiness.
I have felt nothing ever
like the wild wonder of that moment.
