Hello wonderseekers!
This month is Black History Month, and it has been fascinating to see the discussion around certain Black icons like Beyonce and Tracy Chapman and their record-breaking involvement in the traditionally white country music industry. Country music has deep roots to Black musical artistry and it is spectacular to see the genre come full circle in a way.
Black History Month is important for many reasons, but chief among those is that so many stories told about Black Americans focus on the trauma they have experienced (and there is certainly more than enough material there), but they don’t focus on Black success or Black joy or even just Black banality. (The Academy Award-nominated film American Fiction does an entertaining job of examining this dynamic.) So Black History Month is an opportunity to honor, commemorate, and reflect on the constellation of Black contributions, from trailblazing activists to gifted artists to talented chefs to ingenious inventors whose contributions have shaped our world.
