Hello wonderseekers!
I mentioned last week that I’m not the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day. While the celebration has historical roots going back to the 1300s, it was pretty much made what it is today by Sir Richard Cadbury as a means of unleashing the buying power of Victorians mad for courtly love and their first tastes of “eating chocolate.” But I do love love.
V Day tends to center on romantic love, but today is a great day to expand your idea of what love may look like. Love can be complimenting a stranger on their outfit or giving some spare change to someone down on their luck. Love can be a “ ” dinner with your girlfriends or a candle-lit meal for one. Love can be watering the plants for a neighbor or staying late to help out a coworker. Love can be texting an old friend or calling your folks. It can be taking a long bath or saying a prayer. Letting someone get in front of you in traffic or not hitting send on that angry email. Love manifests itself in so many more ways than being coupled up, and all forms of love are wonderbringers.
Victor Hugo described the wonder of love in Les Misérables when he wrote, “Love is the sublime crucible in which is consummated the fusion of man and woman. . . . When two mouths, made sacred by love, draw near to each other to create, it is impossible, that above that ineffable kiss there should not be a thrill in the immense mystery of the stars.”
