Hello wonderseekers!
This Saturday marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year, and it will be the Year of the Dragon. If you were born in 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, or 2012, this is your year. Some ancient advice if you are a Dragon is to clear down your debts, release any grudges, and wear something red for the year. And even if it’s not “your” year, giving the house a deep clean or wearing some red knickers on the day can be an auspicious start. Some two billion people celebrate the Lunar New Year, and as I have Chinese family, we celebrate in our home. I’m not a fan of the pink-tinged consumerist extravaganza that is Valentines Day and so Lunar New Year gives me a more meaningful cause for February celebration.
It’s also a special time for my husband and me, as it was at a Lunar New Year celebration for the Year of the Dragon twelve years ago when we decided to start the process of leaving our “real jobs” and launching our business HATCH. We wandered around the streets of London’s Chinatown, replete with duck and dumplings, filled with bubbling anticipation of what the future might bring. We picked up this little guy to serve as a memento of the hope and enthusiasm we had for our dream, and she hangs in our office as a reminder of those heady, terrifying early days of entrepreneurship. We find the celebration to be a perfect time for reflecting on what we’ve achieved and what we hope for the next year.
Celebrations and traditions are good for our brains. They anchor us, release endorphins, and help us connect to our community. A bit more about that below.

I’ll be doing a bit of a mini-US tour next month, hitting Atlanta (speaking at Woodward Academy where I attended from age 3 to 18), Denver (for WeConnect International Day), New Orleans, and NYC.
