Hello wonderseekers!
It has been a slow flu-ey recovery, and I’m still a bit down in the dumps. (The late, great Pee Wee Herman sums up my feelings pretty succinctly here.) But what I try to do when I’m feeling poopy is to at least convert that negativity into curiosity. So, of course, I went down a “why do our emotions go haywire when we’re ill” rabbit hole, and I was reminded of a concept that plays a role. It’s what’s known as control fallacy or fallacy of control and you can hear a bit more about it below. The summary: you don’t control everything, and you don’t lack control over everything, despite what your brain might like you to believe.
