This past week, December 1st, was World AIDS Day. As a child in the 1980s, AIDS held the world in such a grip of fear and misunderstanding. As a college student in the 1990s, I knew it wasn’t the shameful boogeyman it had been made out to be, but it was still a death sentence for most. It’s astonishing and hopeful to see how, in just a few short decades, this terrible disease is now manageable.
Sometimes, solutions to existential threats can feel impossible to imagine. What if, instead, we focused on existential hope? A bit below on existential hope, and a great book that got me thinking about it.

Some wonderbringers for me this week:
Listen: A recollection of the early days of the AIDS epidemic.
Read: Pockets: An Intimate History of How We Keep Things Close by Hannah Carlson.
I’m delighted to have been selected as one of the top 50 psychology books of 2023 by the Next Big Idea Club listeners. You can listen to my NBIC Book Bite here. Also, my conversation with cult expert Dr. Steven Hassan is now live. It was a fascinating chat about the dark side of wonder and how we can protect ourselves from polarisation.
With wonder and thanks,
