Hello, Wonderseekers,
I love Thanksgiving. I will be honest — I took it a bit for granted before emigrating from the States. My first Thanksgiving away in Belfast I had a raucous party with about 20 of my grad school friends. (I was expecting six.) That included Buckfast, someone wearing only an apron whilst dancing with a pineapple, and a cooked turkey that spilled in a friend’s car, forcing him to sell it because of the unshiftable giblet smell. (In fairness, that was a pretty good time. No pineapples were harmed.)
The nostalgia really hit me when I moved to London. Going to work on the fourth Thursday in November, acting as if it was just another day (which of course it was to everyone else) made me so incredibly homesick. After that year my husband committed to me that we would never miss a Thanksgiving in America if we could help it. Only Covid has kept us away in the twelve years since, and I am looking forward to continuing the tradition with my family again this year.
Below, a few benefits of gratitude.

It’s the 50th anniversary of “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” (with soundtrack by the incomparable Vince Guaraldi.) It won’t be broadcast on ABC this year, but you can watch it for free on Apple TV+.

Gratitude
by the recently passed Louise Glück
Do not think I am not grateful for your small
kindness to me.
I like small kindnesses.
In fact I actually prefer them to the more
substantial kindness, that is always eying you
like a large animal on a rug,
until your whole life reduces
to nothing but waking up morning after morning
cramped, and the bright sun shining on its tusks.
With wonder and thanks,
