Hello, Wonderseekers,
The news cycle continues to deliver heartbreaking stories, and our brains struggle to metabolize it, but also struggle to unplug. Why is that? It might have to do with dopamine. Dopamine is often misunderstood. It is a chemical in our brain associated with rewards, but it is actually associated with the anticipation of a reward. This nuance is what keeps us clicking and scrolling, even if the news is bad. More below.

Some wonderbringers for me this week:
Quotable quotes: “The real problem of humanity is the following: we have Paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions, and god-like technology.” - E.O. Wilson, the originator of the theory of biophilia.
A great book to understand dopamine: Dopamine Nation - Finding Balance in a World of Indulgence by Dr. Anna Lembke.
A bit of a counterpoint from the New York Times (no, you don’t need a dopamine fast): We Have a Dopamine Problem.
Humane, a company started by two former Apple employees, says its new artificial intelligence pin can stop all the scrolling.
Some tips on combatting doomscrolling: Your Doomscrolling Breeds Anxiety. Here’s How to Stop the Cycle.
The Next Big Idea Club (the non-fiction book club curated by Susan Cain, Adam Grant, Malcolm Gladwell, and Daniel Pink) featured The Power of Wonder on their daily podcast. Have a listen! And I’m also excited to share that The Power of Wonder has been selected for Inc. Magazine's Non-Obvious Business Book Awards Longlist, out of more than 1000 titles! Thank you to all the Non-Obvious team for this honor!
With wonder,
