Hello, Wonderseekers,
The news out of Maui is truly heartbreaking. For my birthday this last December I went to Hawaii for the first time, and Lahaina was one of the wonderbringing highlights in a trip that held an abundance of wonder. I was struck by the history, the natural beauty, but most deeply, the people. The devastation there is so complete that it’s hard to wrap my head around it. But I’m holding this time in nostalgia and reverence and hope, and, yes, in wonder.
This week’s wonderbingers newsletter is dedicated to Lahaina and the emergency appeals for help.
Some wonderbringers for me this week:
A phenomenally detailed, sweeping epic through the history of Hawaii: Read Hawaii by James A. Michener. Michener’s story was fiction, but you can read some of the real stories of Lahaina residents who have lost everything, and donate to their individual GoFundMes here.
Amazing wildlife off the coast of Hawaii: Video of the mysterious Sea Pen at almost 10,000 feet deep. And you can support the other animals of Maui by donating to the Maui Humane Society which is working tirelessly to reunite displaced families with their pets.
A peek into how Hawaiians share food and community: In Moloka’i, Anthony Bourdain finds his Hawaiian paradise. Support feeding those who fled Lahaina with a donation to the Maui Food Bank. or World Central Kitchen. (WCKitchen is always the first onsite in a disaster and an incredible organization.)
Regrettably, Lahaina residents aren’t the only ones who have experienced this kind of inconceivable loss. Wildfires, hurricanes, floods, and war globally are all robbing countless folks of their homes, their history, and the fruits of their hard work. If you aren’t inclined to donate then please hold all those who have lost their home in your hearts.
